To apply for registration with the PSI, your pharmacy qualification must be equivalent to Ireland’s standards. However, in the revised 2025 process, even BPharm + MPharm qualifications from India are now eligible for assessment, given they have relevant experience. If they meet the required standard through a holistic review, they may be accepted, even though they do not hold a single continuous degree.
In pointers, the eligibility to appear for the qualification recognition is mentioned below-
Note: UK and Northern Ireland now fall under "Third Country" status post-Brexit.
The required documents for the application are as follows:
Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3
Note: A €300 fee will also apply for any appeals that are submitted in relation to Stage 2, the Holistic Assessment.
New applications under the revised Third Country Qualification Recognition (TCQR) process will be required to make payment of each fee as they progress through the process.
Please note: Refunds will not be issued at any point in the process
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) has recently revised the TCQR process.
To practice as a pharmacist in Ireland, an applicant must go through a two-step process:
1. Qualification Recognition – This step evaluates whether the applicant’s pharmacy degree and work experience match the standards required to work as a pharmacist in Ireland.
2. Registration - Once your qualification is approved, you have to apply to be officially registered before starting practice in Ireland.
Qualification Recognition - 4 Stages of the TCQR Process
Stage 1 – Application Review
Stage 2 – Holistic Assessment
Stage 3 – Examination (Only for Path B)
Stage 4 – Certification
Registration
Applicants who have completed all required stages within the TCQR process will be issued with a certificate by the PSI recognising their qualification as being a ‘qualification appropriate for practice’. This certificate will enable the applicant to apply for registration as a pharmacist in Ireland.
English Language competence is not assessed at the qualification recognition stage but only when an individual presents for registration.
PSI Equivalence exam has two phases:
1) MCQ
2) OSCE
The MCQ exam consists of 80 questions. The OSCE includes practical, experience-based questions. you will have eight stations. They evaluate how you deal with customers, how you advise your patients, etc.
The OSCE exam is further divided into two sections-
Written OSCE (Conducted on Day 1)
Verbal OSCE (Conducted on Day 2)
The PSI exam is a computer-proctored examination that is conducted in any simulated environment under proper surveillance and vigilance. This means that you can take the PSI exam anywhere, ensuring that your examination place meets the guidelines and requirements of PSI. While taking the exam, you will be under the complete vigilance of the PSI.
The PSI Equivalence Exam is an exam that non-EU/EEA pharmacists need to clear to become registered pharmacists in Ireland
The 2025 PSI revision replaced the adaptation period with a holistic assessment. Applicants may now be exempt from the exam (Path A) if their qualifications are deemed equivalent. If not (Path B), they must take a revised MCQ + OSCE exam (or either MCQ or OSCE) in Ireland. The process now includes stage-wise fees
