Why Should You Take the Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway (APEP) Exam?

The healthcare sector is constantly growing and has a high demand for physiotherapists in Australia. Therefore, the government of Australia welcomes registered physiotherapists from around the world to join the healthcare industry in Australia.

To practise as a physiotherapist in Australia, internationally trained candidates must now complete the Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway (APEP). The Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC) uses this pathway to ensure that overseas physiotherapists meet Australian physiotherapy standards in knowledge, skills, and clinical practice.

From 1 October 2025, the former Standard Assessment Pathway has been replaced by the APEP, which offers a more modern, flexible, and remote mode of assessment. Most steps of the APEP can be completed from the comfort of your home, allowing you to undergo the assessment process without needing to travel to Australia, except for one in-person clinical workshop.

Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway (APEP) Eligibility Criteria?

The Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway (APEP) registration procedure...

1. Interim Certificate

      A)  Eligibility Assessment:- This step involves evaluating all the documents you submit according to the requirements.

       B) Cultural Safety Training:- This step involves understanding and respect for diverse perspectives in healthcare practice.

2. APEP Written Assessment Exam

The APEP written assessment consists of two papers that can be taken on the same day. This will assess your knowledge, problem-solving skills and decision-making process. This exam can be taken from your own home country.

3. Remote Capability Assessment

The Capability Assessment is a remote, online open-book oral exam that you can complete from your home country. The exam is conducted by one Australian physiotherapist assessor. You will need to demonstrate your clinical knowledge, patient safety, and ethical practice.

4. English Proficiency

Since Australia is an English-speaking country, migrating to Australia requires proof of your proficiency in the English language. For this purpose, you can choose IELTS, OET, or PTE.

5. Clinical Workshop

A one-day face-to-face clinical workshop and hands-on training in small groups. The candidates have to go to Melbourne to complete this step, after which they will get the final certificate after the assessment.

The eligibility criteria for the Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway (APEP) exams is mentioned below-

To be eligible for the APEP, you must have:

  • An overseas physiotherapy qualification (minimum 4 year degree in physiotherapy or higher)

  • Unrestricted/ full registration to practise as a physiotherapist in the country where you completed your qualification

    OR

  • If your country does not have a regulatory authority, you must be legally allowed to practise without restrictions in that country

Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway (APEP) Exam Format

Internationally qualified physiotherapists are assessed through two steps under the APEP:

1. Written Assessment

The Written Assessment is completed online and consists of two papers on the same day:

  • Paper 1: Morning (2 hours)

  • Paper 2: Afternoon (2 hours)

Each paper contains 15 clinical case scenarios with a total of 60 multiple-choice questions.

2. Remote Capability Assessment

This is an online, open-book oral exam that takes around 2 hours in total (with about 1.5 hours of active exam time). You will be given 3 short cases and 1 long case to discuss, and you may use your notes, textbooks, and online resources during the assessment.

Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway (APEP) Exam Test Centres

The Written Assessment and Capability Assessment are both remotely supervised, allowing you to complete them from your own location. However, if the candidate desires to appear in person can take the test from Melbourne or Sydney. This means that candidates in India (and other countries) can sit the exams without travelling to Australia.
