Greetings from Papua New Guinea. At first I didn’t know where to start and how to approach the AMC MCQ exam. Since June 2023 when I started this sessions on AMC preparation the story is different now. The Two lecturers Namely, Dr Swapnil and Dr Udara are exceptionally committed and deliver well. About The AMC Examination
What is the AMC Exam?
The demand for qualified medical doctors outnumbers the supply in Australia. Therefore, Australia invites MBBS and MD doctors worldwide to become registered doctors.
To become a doctor in Australia, you must crack the AMC exam. The Australian Medical Council assesses the skills and expertise of the doctors seeking registration in Australia.
Both the AMC MCQ exam and the AMC Clinical exam are administered by Pearson VUE and can be taken from the Pearson VUE test centres around the world.
Once the exam is completed successfully, you may apply for a work/PR visa.
AMC Exam Eligibility Criteria
A procedure known as the eligibility check checks the candidates' eligibility to sit the AMC exam. Professional qualifications, registration history, etc., are assessed during this time. Work experience is not mandatory but can be beneficial.
The eligibility to appear for the exam is mentioned below-
- Bachelor’s degree in Medicine (MBBS/MD/MS) from a recognised college/University.
- Degree from a University listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDoMS).
Procedure for AMC
To complete the procedure of taking the AMC exam and becoming a registered doctor in Australia, a few steps need to be followed.
Pathway for Registration
The candidate should choose a pathway for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Following are the pathways.
- Standard Pathway
- Competent Authority Pathway
- Specialist Pathway
- Short-Term Training in a Medical Specialty Pathway.
1. Document Evaluation
The first step is to get your documents verified by the Australian Medical Council. This further involves two steps-
- AMC Portfolio- Create your AMC portfolio on the official website of the Australian Medical Council and upload all your documents in the highest quality.
- EPIC Verification- In this step, your credentials are verified by the Electronic Portfolio or International Candidates.
2. AMC MCQ Exam
The AMC MCQ exam is a computer-administered test that assesses the knowledge of the principles and practise of medicine in the fields of general practice, internal medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology.
3. English Proficiency
At the time of visa processing, proficiency in the English language is essential. This can be done by taking English proficiency tests such as IELTS/PTE/OET.
Adequate scores in these exams can lead to a smoother visa application process.
4. AMC Clinical Exam/Workplace-based Assessment
The AMC clinical exam is conducted to evaluate clinical skills in medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics and psychiatry along with the candidate’s ability to communicate with patients, their families and other health workers.
Another option is the workplace-based assessment which requires the candidate to be registered with the Medical Board of Australia before applying directly to a WBA provider.
Exam Format
The AMC MCQ exam is a 3.5-hour test with 150 multiple-choice questions, all of which are expected to be answered. The examination structure does not follow a negative marking system. The AMC score is represented on a scale of 0 to 500.
AMC 1 Passing - AMC 1 passing score is 250.
The AMC clinical exam consists of 16 assessed Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) stations and 4 rest stations, each lasting 10 minutes (2 Minutes Reading + 8 Minutes Assessment). 2 Pilot Stations (not scored). It can be taken online or in person.
AMC 2 Passing - 9 stations out of 14 OSCE stations.
There is no limit on the number of attempts a candidate may have at the clinical exam.
