Why Should You Take the FPGEE and NAPLEX Exam?
The FPGEE (Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination) evaluates whether your pharmacy education from outside the U.S. meets the standards expected by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). The FPGEE is an entry exam for foreign pharmacy graduates, like PharmD holders, to practice as licensed pharmacists in the United States. Conducted by the NABP, the FPGEE tests your basic knowledge in pharmaceutical sciences and U.S. pharmacy practice.
It’s a one-day test with multiple-choice questions that focus on pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacology, and health systems. Under guidance from reputable coaching platforms like Academically Global, you are free to aim for success in your first try. The FPGEE includes 200 questions in 4.5 hours that cover patient safety, treatment outcomes, and medication therapy management. It is scored on a scale of 0–150, and a minimum scaled score of 75 is required to pass.
What is the NAPLEX exam?
Once you pass the FPGEE, the next step is to complete your required internship hours. After that, you must take the NAPLEX (North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination), which evaluates how well you apply your pharmaceutical knowledge in real clinical settings. It is the last hurdle before full licensure and has 225 questions to be done in 6 hrs with a passing score of 75.
Procedure For FPGEE and NAPLEX
Procedure for FPGEE and NAPLEX Exam
Step 1: Receive FPGEC Certification
1. Apply for FPGEC Certification (Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Certification)
Conducted by: NABP (National Association of Boards of Pharmacy)
Documents Required:
a. Pharmacy degree transcripts
b. Proof of licensure in home country
c. Passport & ID
d. TOEFL iBT scores (minimum total 89, with specific section requirements)
2. Take the TOEFL iBT Exam
Must meet NABP minimum scores:
a. Reading: ≥ 21
b. Listening: ≥ 22
c. Speaking: ≥ 25
d. Writing: ≥ 22
3. Sit for the FPGEE Exam
a. Conducted once a year (usually in spring or fall)
Can only be taken in the USA
b. Fee: $750 USD (≈ ₹62,250)
200 multiple choice questions; 4.5 hours
Note: Once you complete these steps, you will receive the FPGEC Certificate. This certificate makes you eligible to apply for internship hours and proceed to the next steps.
Step 2: Apply for Internship
a. Each state has its own rules and number of internship hours required.
b. Typically 1,500 hours of internship in a U.S. pharmacy under a licensed pharmacist in a retail, hospital, or clinical pharmacy in the U.S.
Step 3: Apply and Pass the NAPLEX Exam
a. National pharmacist licensing exam in the USA
b. 225 questions; 6 hours
c. Fee: $520 USD (≈ ₹47,700)
d. Tests clinical knowledge, calculations, drug therapy, and decision-making
Step 4: Apply and Pass the MPJE (Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam)
a. Exam on U.S. pharmacy laws and ethics
b. Not all states require it (some have their own law exams)
Obtain a Pharmacist License in the USA
a. After passing NAPLEX (+ MPJE if applicable), and completing internship hours, you are granted a license
b. You can now practice as a pharmacist in the U.S.
FPGEE Exam Center Details:
a. The FPGEE is administered exclusively at Pearson VUE test centers located within the USA only.
b. There are no FPGEE exam centers in India or any other country outside the U.S.
Number of Attempts: You can take the FPGEE and NAPLEX up to 5 times.
Exam Frequency: The FPGEE is typically conducted only once per year.
H1B / O1 Visa Pathway for Pharmacists
Pharmacists who have cleared FPGEE/NAPLEX can pursue U.S. career opportunities through employer-sponsored visas.
The H1B visa is the most common route, where a U.S. employer (hospital, retail chain, or pharmacy group) sponsors you for a pharmacist role after you meet licensing requirements (including state licensure and internship hours).
The O1 visa is a specialized option for pharmacists with exceptional achievements, such as research, publications, or leadership in clinical practice, allowing faster entry without lottery constraints.
In both cases, securing a job offer is the key step, as visa sponsorship is tied directly to employment in the U.S. healthcare system.
