What is the PLAB Exam?
The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) exam is an assessment for doctors who have qualified overseas and wish to practice medicine in the United Kingdom.
It is designed to ensure that these international medical graduates have the necessary knowledge and skills to practice safely and effectively within the UK's healthcare system.
There are two parts to this PLAB Exam - PLAB 1 and PLAB 2. You need to pass both parts to get the license to practise as a doctor in the UK.
The PLAB Exam is mandatory for medical practitioners who want to practise in the UK. To qualify for the PLAB Exam, the following criteria must be met:
The medical graduate’s primary qualifications must be recognised by an institution listed in the World Health Organization Directory of Medical Schools.
Candidates are required to have taken the IELTS exam and achieved a minimum overall score of 7, with a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four language modules.
The candidates must have completed a minimum of 12 months of postgraduate clinical experience at a teaching hospital.
English Proficiency
Candidates are required to demonstrate proficiency in English by taking an approved English language test, such as IELTS, and achieving the required scores.
Complete EPIC Verification
Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) verification may be necessary to authenticate your primary medical qualification.
Take PLAB 1
After scoring the desired marks in IELTS, international medical graduates must pass PLAB 1, a written examination consisting of multiple-choice questions that assess their medical knowledge.
Take PLAB 2
After clearing PLAB 1 and completing EPIC Verification, candidates need to pass PLAB 2, which is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) assessing clinical and communication skills in various scenarios.
Apply for GMC Registration
Once both PLAB exams are successfully completed, candidates can apply to the General Medical Council (GMC) for registration, allowing them to practice medicine in the UK, subject to meeting other requirements.
PLAB 1
PLAB 1 is a written examination consisting of 180 multiple-choice questions that must be completed within a three-hour time frame. Each question begins with a brief scenario, followed by a corresponding query. Your task is to select the correct answer from the five options provided.
PLAB 2
PLAB 2 is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) comprising 16 scenarios, with each scenario lasting for eight minutes. The objective is to replicate real-life situations, such as simulated consultations. Part 2 assessments are conducted year-round at clinical assessment centres.
PLAB Part 1 examinations are held in several Indian states, including Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai. Kolkata and New Delhi.
The PLAB exam is for assessing the competence of international medical graduates who wish to practise medicine in the United Kingdom.
PLAB 1 costs £255 and PLAB 2 costs £934.
The PLAB exam is considered challenging, and its difficulty can vary from candidate to candidate. Success depends on subject knowledge and proper preparation.
Eligibility for the PLAB exam typically includes international medical graduates with a recognised medical qualification, satisfactory English language proficiency, and a required amount of clinical experience.
For PLAB, the IELTS overall score should be 7, with a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four language modules.
The PLAB exam is accepted in several countries, especially those that are part of the Commonwealth. According to the General Medical Council (GMC), PLAB-accepting countries are Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Dubai, Ireland, Scotland, Qatar, United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia
Candidates can appear for PLAB 1 as many times as they like but can only appear for PLAB 2 four times. After 4th time, they have to start again from the PLAB 1.
There’s no negative marking in PLAB.
The pass mark, or cutoff score, for PLAB 1 can vary from one exam session to another. The General Medical Council (GMC) periodically reviews and sets the pass mark for PLAB 1 to ensure it remains a reliable assessment of medical knowledge.
There is no specified age limit for the PLAB exam
