Cracking the APC: Sayyadah's Success Story

Sayyadah's Success Story

Sayyadah is a student of Academically who had taken the APC Written Assessment Preparation Course for the Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC) Exam; she successfully passed the exam on her first attempt with the help of Academically.

She completed her graduation and post-graduation in Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy and has eight years of experience working in India's hospitals and clinical settings. She moved to Australia with her husband and is currently based in Perth.

Moving to Australia and the APC Preparation Course

Upon moving to Australia, Sayyadah quickly realised that to practise physiotherapy, passing the Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC) exam was essential. The exam consists of two papers, each containing 60 questions and 5 case scenarios with four related questions each. These cases typically include a mixture of neurology, orthopaedic, and cardiology problems, requiring a deep understanding and the ability to think critically about patient care.

Importance of Clinical Knowledge and Ethics

Sayyadah emphasises the importance of mastering the 4th-year syllabus, which is heavily focused on clinical knowledge. This foundation made her journey significantly more manageable. The materials and cases in the preparation course were similar to what she had encountered in India, but with one significant difference: the ethics involved.

Understanding Australian healthcare ethics is crucial. For instance, in Australia, a 16-year-old is considered capable of making medical decisions, whereas in India, parents typically make such decisions for their children. Grasping these ethical nuances is vital to success in the APC exam.

Preparation Strategies That Helped Her Pass APC

  • Sayyadah advises having a solid understanding of the pathophysiology of various diseases.
  • Practising with mock exams is essential. She used resources like Google Drive shared by Academically, which often contains questions and answers for APC students. She regularly appeared for these mock exams and submitted her answers to mentors like Michael Sir, Mansi Mam, and Dr. Kushangi for feedback. This practice was invaluable in building her confidence.
  • She recommends not just passively attending lectures but also asking questions and engaging in discussions. This approach helps clarify doubts and reinforce learning.

Working in Australia

Although Sayyadah hasn't started working in Australia, she has found it more organised than in India, with extensive documentation required. This documentation is crucial, as lacking proper records can lead to legal issues.

Sayyadah reminds us that the APC clinical and written assessments must be cleared to secure a job. While passing the written assessment alone can sometimes help get a job, it largely depends on luck, and often, these opportunities are in rural areas.

Also, she emphasises a high demand for physiotherapists in various specialties, including geriatrics and sports physiotherapy. The scope and opportunities here are vast, much more so than in India.

Final Tips for APC Aspirants

Study Diligently: Dedicate 8-12 hours a day for at least a month and a half before the exam. Start slow and gradually increase your study hours.

Use Resources Wisely: Utilise available study materials, engage in mock exams, and seek feedback from experienced mentors.

Stay Curious and Engaged: Always ask questions and participate actively in your learning process.

As Pelé said, "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.”

Keep working hard, and you will reach your destination at the right time.

Sayyadah's journey to clearing the APC exam was challenging but rewarding. With the proper preparation and mindset, aspiring physiotherapists can succeed and continue their professional journey in Australia.
