Who is the AMC exam intended for?

The Australian Medical Council, AMC for short, is the body that decides who can or cannot practice medicine in Australia as an international medical graduate (IMGs). To examine the candidates, AMC has various assessment tests and qualification requirements. The strict control on the selection process ensures the standard of healthcare that is enjoyed by the Australian public.

The AMC exams are meant for:

  • International medical graduates with no experience.
  • International medical graduates with experience.
  • International medical graduates having a specialization.

What are the components of the AMC Exam?

The AMC exam is divided into two parts. This ensures a thorough assessment of the candidates’ skills in both theory and practice.

  • The AMC CAT MCQ Exam: This multiple-choice question exam assesses the theoretical knowledge and principles of the candidates. There are 150 total items on this test. You need to attempt all the items to get properly assessed.
  • The AMC Clinical Exam: The clinical exam is an assessment of the practical skills and on-site practice of the candidate. It deals with detection, treatment plans, and patient counselling. There are 16 assessed stations, and 4 rest stations in this assessment.
  • The WBA Program: This is an alternative to the AMC Clinical Exam. For IMGs having experience, WBA is a good option. It is a long-term, on-site assessment. You will work in a clinical setting under supervision for 6 months to a year. You will be assessed there, and on completion, you will be graded.

What Can You Expect in The AMC Exam?

The purpose of the AMC assessment is to test the knowledge and skills of candidates in all the major branches of medicine. For both the assessment, the subjects remain the same:

  • Adult and aged care health (Medicine and Surgery)
  • Women’s Health (including Ob/Gyn)
  • Child Health
  • Mental Health
  • Population and Community Health and Ethics
