My Story: Why I Started Talking About This Exam Back in 2018
I’m Dr. Akram Ahmad, a clinical pharmacist living and working in Australia. Since 2018, I’ve been helping pharmacists pursue international career opportunities through my YouTube videos and online guidance.
I've been making videos about this exam since 2018, back then, everyone knew it as KAPS, years before it became OPRA. I remember the earliest comments on those videos: simple, nervous questions like “is this exam even worth it?” Since then, we've guided over 4,000 students through licensing exams across different countries, and this is one of the oldest dedicated pharmacist coaching operations still running today.
Here's the story I tell in almost every video, because it's the real reason this exam matters: a pharmacist in India studies for 4 to 6 years BPharm or PharmD, sometimes further and after all of that, ends up earning ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 a month, often working well beyond a standard week just to hold onto that. A registered pharmacist in Australia, by comparison, can earn the equivalent of ₹4-6 lakh a month, working a standard 40-hour week, with a real quality of life and a genuine pathway to permanent residency.
That gap is exactly why so many of you message me the same question, almost every single day: “Am I eligible for OPRA?” So let's answer it properly not with guesses, but with what APC actually requires.
Before you start preparing: check your eligibility
Almost every day, pharmacists ask me the same question: “Am I eligible for the OPRA exam?” The question often comes with another concern: a non-standard degree pathway, a lateral-entry qualification, missing documents, or uncertainty about whether their pharmacy qualification meets Australian requirements.
If you are planning to take the Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment (OPRA) as part of the pathway to pharmacist registration in Australia, there is one step you should not skip: the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) Eligibility Check.
The biggest lesson years of this journey have taught me is simple: do not spend months preparing for the exam before you know that you can actually sit it.
Quick answer: Who can apply for OPRA?
For the Australian Knowledge Stream, OPRA is the exam used for overseas-qualified pharmacists whose pharmacy qualification was completed outside Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States.
According to the APC, your pharmacy qualification must incorporate the knowledge of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences that forms the foundation of the pathway to general registration in Australia. If the qualification was completed after 1 January 2006, it must be equivalent to at least four years of full-time academic study. For qualifications completed before 1 January 2006, the requirement is at least three years of full-time academic study.
Importantly, eligibility is confirmed by APC through its Eligibility Check. Holding a degree with a particular title does not, by itself, guarantee that you can sit OPRA.
What is the OPRA exam?
The Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment (OPRA) is a computer-delivered multiple-choice exam for overseas-trained pharmacists. APC says the exam assesses the biomedical, pharmaceutical and clinical sciences that underpin pharmacy practice in Australia.
The current exam format is 120 multiple-choice questions completed in 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes). The OPRA exam is one part of the Knowledge Stream skills-assessment pathway. You can write OPRA in your home country.
OPRA eligibility criteria: what APC currently requires
1. Your pharmacy qualification must be from an eligible country
For the Australian Knowledge Stream, the qualification must have been completed outside Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA.
2. Your qualification must meet the academic-study requirement
For qualifications completed after 1 January 2006, APC states that the qualification must be equivalent to four years of full-time academic study. For qualifications completed before 1 January 2006, the requirement is three years of full-time academic study.
3. Your qualification must cover pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences
APC assesses whether the qualification incorporates the knowledge of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences that forms the foundation of the Australian pathway to general registration.
4. You must pass the APC Eligibility Check before registering for OPRA
You cannot simply book the OPRA exam based on your degree title. APC requires you to complete the Eligibility Check and receive confirmation that you are eligible to sit the exam.
What about BPharm, PharmD, MPharm and lateral-entry BPharm?
This is where many online explanations become too simplistic. APC's current published criteria focus on the nature and duration of the pharmacy qualification, not simply whether the certificate says BPharm, PharmD or MPharm.
BPharm
A BPharm may be suitable if it meets APC's qualification requirements. The duration, curriculum and other evidence are assessed through the Eligibility Check.
PharmD
A PharmD may be considered as a pharmacy qualification, but the qualification still needs to meet APC's eligibility requirements. Do not assume that the degree title alone guarantees eligibility.
MPharm
An MPharm may be considered where it meets the relevant requirements. APC assesses the qualification and supporting documents through the Eligibility Check.
Lateral-entry BPharm
This is one of the most common questions from Indian pharmacists. If you completed a shorter BPharm through lateral entry after a Diploma in Pharmacy, do not assume that it is automatically accepted simply because it is called a BPharm. APC's published requirement for qualifications completed after 1 January 2006 is equivalence to four years of full-time academic study. Your individual qualification should therefore be checked with APC before you commit to OPRA preparation.
Is work experience required for OPRA eligibility?
Work experience is not listed by APC as a requirement for the initial Knowledge Stream Eligibility Check. The key issue is whether your pharmacy qualification meets the published eligibility requirements.
Does CGPA or a backlog automatically make you ineligible?
APC's published eligibility criteria do not identify a specific CGPA cut-off or state that a past academic backlog automatically disqualifies a candidate. However, eligibility is determined through APC's assessment of your qualification and documents. If your academic history is unusual, it is better to confirm your position with APC rather than rely on assumptions.
Is there a public APC list of universities you can check?
Based on our experience guiding overseas pharmacists since 2018, our understanding is that around 258 Indian universities are currently recognised on APC's internal list. This is based on what we have consistently seen through our students and is not an official APC-published figure. APC does not publish a public, searchable list of all recognised universities.
If your university is not on the list we have seen, that does not automatically mean you are ineligible. You may need to provide additional evidence and go through APC's assessment process.
This is important because eligibility is not simply a matter of finding your university name on a social-media list or an unofficial spreadsheet.
What documents do you need for the OPRA Eligibility Check?
- Current passport.
- An official photo-bearing identity document.
- Birth certificate, or a second acceptable photo-bearing identity document where permitted by APC.
- Your pharmacy qualification certificate, or a letter of completion if the final certificate has not yet been issued.
- Complete academic transcript showing subjects/units and examination results for every semester.
- Course syllabus, including the full subject list and, where possible, subject summaries.
- Evidence of registration is optional according to APC's current document checklist.
- If documents are not in English, APC requires appropriate English translations; its current guidance specifies NAATI-accredited translators for translations it accepts.
How to check your OPRA eligibility: step by step
- Go to the Australian Pharmacy Council website and select the Knowledge Stream pathway.
- Create or access your Candidate Portal account.
- Start the Eligibility Check application.
- Prepare and upload the required documents.
- Pay the Eligibility Check fee and submit your application.
- Wait for APC's eligibility decision or respond if APC asks for additional information.
- Only after APC confirms that you are eligible should you register for the OPRA exam.
Why checking eligibility first can save you months
Imagine spending three or four months studying for OPRA, buying resources and planning your move to Australia, only to discover that your qualification needs further assessment or that you are missing important documents.
That is why I recommend a simple order: eligibility first, preparation second.
The eligibility check is not just paperwork. It tells you whether you have a clear pathway to the OPRA exam.
My advice to overseas pharmacists
If you are serious about becoming a pharmacist in Australia, do not start with coaching, books or an exam date. Start with eligibility.
Check your qualification. Gather your documents. Understand the pathway. Then prepare for OPRA with a clear plan.
And if your qualification is unusual, especially a lateral-entry BPharm or a degree with a non-standard study structure, get the eligibility question answered before investing heavily in preparation.
