Physiotherapy Licensing & Registration Fees Abroad: 2026 Cost Comparison

Australia: APEP — Five Stages, Mostly Remote

United States: FCCPT, State Boards, and the NPTE   

The US process runs through three separate bodies: a credential evaluation agency, your target state board, and FSBPT (which administers the national exam).

Canada  - A System Mid-Transition

Two things changed structurally in 2026, and both matter for anyone applying this year.

Process:

1. Submit an English (or French) proficiency test through a CAPR-approved provider — required before CAPR reviews your file. Applicants trained in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or the US are typically exempt.
2. Apply for CAPR credentialling. CAPR reviews your degree, syllabus, and clinical hours, and requires a pre-approved course on the Canadian healthcare system (can be started before applying). Fee: CAD $1,486. Review takes ~5–9 weeks for "precedent" cases, longer otherwise.
3. Note for 2026 applicants: CAPR's current Standard Credentialling Pathway is being replaced by the new Comparability Evaluation Pathway in October 2026 — check which process applies to your application date.
4. Sit the CPTE once credentialled. As of January 2026, this replaced the old two-exam model (separate written PCE + provincial clinical exam) with a single 5-hour, remotely proctored exam combining written and oral sections into one pass/fail result. Fee: CAD $2,500 (discounted CAD $1,800 through December 2026 for candidates who already passed the old written PCE in 2025). You can't retake just one section — a fail means retaking the whole exam.

New Zealand  - Pathway-Dependent, Not a Flat Fee

New Zealand's fees are set annually by the Physiotherapy Board (PBNZ) and differ meaningfully depending on which pathway you qualify for.

Process:

1. Determine your pathway. There are three main routes for international applicants:

• Express Pathway — for physiotherapists trained in and currently (or eligibly) registered in the UK, Ireland, Canada, or South Africa. Faster and cheaper.
• General Pathway — for everyone else. Assessed against the Physiotherapy Practice Thresholds in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
• Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition (TTMR) — for applicants already holding AHPRA registration in Australia.

Saudi Arabia's SCFHS process adds a distinct classification step that doesn't map cleanly onto the UAE model. This isn't a single uniform "DataFlow plus one exam" process, even though it's often described that way.

UAE (Dubai/Abu Dhabi) — process:

1. Create a Sheryan account and complete self-assessment to establish initial eligibility.
2. Complete DataFlow Primary Source Verification. DataFlow contacts your university, employers, and licensing body directly. Fee for allied health categories (including physiotherapists): AED 935 (doctors pay more, AED 1,235). Processing: 30–60 working days, longer if institutions are slow to respond.
3. Pay the Sheryan application fee: AED 200–300.
4. Book and sit the Prometric exam once eligible — AED 300–500 for allied health/nursing categories. You can test at any authorized Prometric center globally, not just in the UAE. Results typically post within 5–7 working days.
5. Activate your license once you secure a job offer from an accredited facility — activation is tied to employment, not just exam completion.

Saudi Arabia (SCFHS via Mumaris+) — process:

1. Create a Mumaris+ account, submit personal and professional details, and pay the SAR 200 Professional Classification fee.
2. DataFlow verification opens automatically once SCFHS approves your initial application. Fee varies by document volume — sources put it anywhere from SAR 400–900 to SAR 1,100–1,800, so treat SAR 1,000–1,800 as a reasonable planning band rather than a fixed number. Processing: 6–10 weeks.
3. SCFHS Professional Classification review — determines which tier you're classified into (Technician, Specialist, or Consultant), which affects both scope of practice and salary band.
4. Sit the Prometric exam (or oral assessment, for some categories) once your eligibility number appears in Mumaris+ — booking isn't possible before this.
