"Fall seven times, stand up eight."
Missing the AMC pass mark by a few marks hurts in a very particular way. You studied for months, you were close, and close still reads as a fail. That is exactly where Dr. Prapti found herself.
Congratulations, Dr. Prapti, on clearing the AMC exam! Passing is a big achievement on its own, and doing it on the second attempt, after missing by just a few marks, says a lot. We're proud of you, and grateful that you shared how you did it so the next aspirant doesn't have to figure it out alone.
Originally from India, she completed her MBBS at Giani University, China (2019 to 2025) and cleared the AMC exam on her second attempt. In a conversation with the Academically team, she talked about what went wrong the first time, what she changed, and the parts of the exam nobody warns you about.

Forging a Different Path: From China to Australia
For many international medical graduates from India, the post-MBBS roadmap looks identical: following the crowd toward the FMGE and NEET PG. However, during her internship, Dr. Prapti decided she wanted to explore different paths. After researching online, she discovered the AMC pathway and reached out to an academic platform to learn exactly how the process worked. From that point on, she set her sights strictly on the USMLE and AMC, bypassing the traditional route.
The Comeback: Overcoming a Narrow Defeat
The AMC exam is unforgiving. Dr. Prapti spent six to seven months properly preparing for her first attempt, only to find out she had failed by just a few marks.
When the demotivation hit, she had to accept the harsh reality. As she put it, she recognized that mistakes have consequences, and she simply had to work through them. Instead of giving up, she went straight back to the fundamentals, revising basic concepts like patient interaction and ABCD protocols again and again.
Preparation Strategy: Quality Over Quantity
When she restarted her prep, she abandoned the trap of tracking hours and instead focused entirely on the quality of her study sessions. Even though she was putting in around 10 hours a day, she worked smarter.
Here is what actually moved the needle for her:
- The One-Month Deep Dive: She identified her weaker subjects specifically Medicine and Surgery and gave them an entire month of dedicated, repeated review.
- MCQs as a Teaching Tool: She split her daily routine systematically. From 6:00 to 12:00, she worked exclusively on MCQs for AMC Exam . After 12:00, she transitioned to theory. She often used practice questions to learn concepts backward, even if she hadn't formally covered the theory yet.

What is the Toughest Part of the AMC Exam?
When asked about the most daunting aspect of the AMC exam, Dr. Prapti pointed to two massive hurdles:
1. The Element of Uncertainty Unlike standard university exams, the AMC exam doesn't test predetermined concepts in a predictable way. Dr. Prapti noted that the sheer uncertainty of what clinical concepts will actually appear on the screen is the most confusing and scary part of the process.
2. The Time Management Trap (Going Too Fast) While many candidates run out of time, Dr. Prapti had the opposite problem: she was solving questions too fast. During her exam, she realized that rushing was causing her to make mistakes. She had to consciously force herself to slow down from the very first question. She made sure to read the final line of every clinical stem calmly, verifying if the question was asking for the "most appropriate step" or "best management" before finalizing her answer.
The Power of Mentorship
When Dr. Prapti finally saw the green "pass" on her screen, her hands were shaking. The very first person she called wasn't even her parents, they were the AMC-qualified mentors at Academically who have active regitsration with AHPRA. Dr. Prapti credits them for holding her together during her lowest moments and constantly encouraging her to continue.
What Can AMC Aspirants Take From Her Story?
If you're preparing for the AMC, here is a simple way to use her experience:
- Treat a low score or a failed attempt as information, not a verdict
- Start MCQs early and use them to learn
- Find your weakest subjects and block out proper time for them
- Practise reading the last line of the question first, every time
- Slow down in the exam, even if you feel confident
- Keep a mentor or community close
You don't have to navigate the uncertainty of the AMC exam alone. Whether you are starting from scratch or recovering from a previous attempt, structured guidance makes all the difference.
