Why Should You Take the OSPAP Course Exam?
If your dream is to practice as a registered pharmacist in the UK, then the first step is OSPAP (Overseas Pharmacists Assessment Programme) which is a postgraduate diploma course
Many candidates feel that OSPAP is an exam, which is quite opposite; It is a careful designed course for international pharmacists who are qualified outside the European Economic Zone (EEA) and want to practice in United Kingdom.
Completing the OSPAP is a mandatory step before you can sit for the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) registration assessment, which is the final requirement
to become a licensed pharmacist in the UK.

Steps to Apply for the OSPAP Course
1. Submit an Eligibility Application to the GPhC
Your first step is to apply for an eligibility assessment with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). This is to verify that your qualifications and experience meet UK standards.
You’ll need to submit:
- Certified copy of your pharmacy degree and academic transcripts
- You should be a registered pharmacist in you home country for proof, you need to submit the respective documents.
- English language test results (IELTS, OET, etc.)
- Certified passport and identity documents
- Two professional references (academic and employer)
- Letter of Good Standing from your pharmacy regulator
If everything goes well, you will be receiving an official letter stating that you are eligible for the OSPAP course.
2. Prove Your English Language Proficiency
As you know the UK is a english speaking country and you need to prove your fluency. For this you can sit for the following test:
- IELTS: Minimum score of 7.0 in all sections
- OET: Minimum Grade B in all components
3. Apply to Universities Offering OSPAP
Once deemed eligible by the GPhC, you can apply to GPhC-approved universities offering the OSPAP postgraduate diploma. Popular providers include:
- Aston University
- University of Hertfordshire
- University of Brighton
- University of Sunderland
4. Receive Admission and Start Your OSPAP Course
If selected, you’ll receive an offer and can begin your OSPAP course, which usually starts in September or October.
5. Complete 52 Weeks of Foundation Training
After finishing the OSPAP course, you must undergo a full year (52 weeks) of Foundation Training. This structured, hands-on internship takes place in a community or hospital pharmacy.
6. Qualify the GPhC Registration Assessment
As soon as you complete your training, the next step is to sit for the examination and it is called the GPhC Registration Assessment. You need to qualify this examination to be a registered pharmacist in the UK.
7. Register as a UK Pharmacist
Now comes the last step, after qualifying the exam, you can go for registration, and after it you are eligible to practice as a pharmacist in the UK
The eligibility criteria for the OSPAP Course exams is mentioned below-
OSPAP Eligibility Criteria
Pharmacy Degree: BPharm or PharmD.
Registration Status: Should be a registered pharmacist in your home country.
English Proficiency: IELTS score of 7.0 or Grade B in OET.
Work Experience: Not mandatory.
However, some universities may prefer candidates with 6+ months of patient-facing experience.
Medical Fitness: You must be medically fit to undertake clinical practice and placements in the UK.

Proof of Qualification & Eligibility to Practice Pharmacy
- Certified copy of your pharmacy degree certificate
- UK ENIC Statement of Comparability (certified copy)
- If your qualification is not deemed equivalent to a UK BPharm, also include:
- A copy of the syllabus you studied
- Completed international comparative assessment framework
- Any additional certificates showing pharmacy training or qualifications
Proof of English Language Proficiency
It is mandatory to provide one of the following:
- IELTS test result: You should have minimum 7.0 bands
- OET test: You need to score atleast Grade B or higher to be eligible
- Proof of pharmacy qualification taught and examined in English in a majority English-speaking country (excluding the UK)
- Proof of practising as a pharmacist for 2+ years in a majority English-speaking country
Note: Some universities may not accept options 3 and 4, you may need to check with them directly.
Proof of Identity
- Certified copy of the photo page of your valid passport
- Birth certificate (certified if born outside UK)
- Statutory declaration (if your name differs across documents, your birth certificate is in a non-English language)
- Your birth was registered more than 1 year after birth date)
- Two passport-size photos, countersigned and attached with a photo certification form
