  • Roy Chihaka is a pharmacist with vast experience in diverse facets of the pharmaceutical industry, such as regulation, academia and clinical sectors.
  • He completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honors) from the University of Zimbabwe. Later, he pursued his Masters in Medicine from the Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tianjin, China, with Plant Pharmacology as a specialisation. 
  • Roy has extended experience, including 7 years of experience as a Zimbabwean regulator of the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe. Later, he started working as a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe.
  • Currently, he is pursuing his Ph.D. from Southern Cross University in New South Wales.
  • Roy has also successfully cleared the KAPS exam.

About The New Zealand KAPS Examination

What is the New Zealand KAPS Exam?

There is a consistent demand for healthcare professionals, especially pharmacists, in New Zealand. That’s why New Zealand is inviting overseas-trained pharmacists to work in its country. A pharmacist must clear New Zealand’s KAPS Exam to get registered and a job there. The NZ KAPS Exam is the Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Sciences Exam. The Pharmacy Council of New Zealand(PCNZ) conducts this exam for international pharmacists who wish to work in New Zealand. The exam aims to ensure that internationally qualified pharmacists have the necessary knowledge to practice safely and effectively within New Zealand’s healthcare system. Once you clear this exam, you can apply for a job, earn well, and get a PR Visa.

New Zealand KAPS Exam Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to write the New Zealand KAPS Exam, a pharmacist must have the following:

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharma) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree
  • Active registration with the state pharmacy council in your home country
Procedure for New Zealand KAPS

1. Initial Skill Assessment by Pharmacy Council of New Zealand

The first step is to check if you are eligible to appear for the KAPS Exam. For this, the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand will check your records and declare your eligibility.

Once you clear this initial assessment, you will be eligible to appear for the KAPS Exam.

2. The New Zealand KAPS Exam

The NZ KAPS Exam is an online exam, so you can take it from your chosen test centre. This exam happens thrice yearly: in March, July, and November. 

It is a Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) exam. To qualify, you must obtain 50% in all subsections and an overall score of 50%.

3. New Zealand Pharmacy Legislation (NZPL) Course

This course provides overseas-qualified pharmacists with an understanding of the professional, legal, and ethical responsibilities required for practicing in New Zealand.

Enrollment is available only once per year. This online course has 10 modules and lasts 3 months.

4. Registration in the Intern Pharmacist Scope of Practice

Apply for registration in the Intern Pharmacist Scope of Practice. This initial step allows you to gain practical experience under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist, ensuring you develop the necessary skills and knowledge required for full professional practice.

5. EVOLVE Internship programme

This programme offers practical training and support for interns throughout their intern year, running from February 1st to November 7th. Managed by a dedicated team of pharmacists and support staff, the program includes assignments, workshops, portfolios, and appraisals. Interns work full-time under the supervision of experienced pharmacists to develop essential skills and competencies. 

6. Complete Registration

Once the exams are cleared and internships are done, pharmacists must register with the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand (PCNZ) as registered pharmacists in New Zealand.

Exam Format

The NZ KAPS Exam consists of 2 separate papers. Each paper consists of 100 questions for 4 hours, and you must sit for both papers on the same day. The two papers that make up the NZ KAPS Exam are:

Paper 1:  Pharmaceutical Chemistry,  Physiology and Pharmacology

Paper 2:  Pharmaceutics and Therapeutics.

Testing Centres

The NZ KAPS Exam is an online exam. Therefore, you can take the exam at the nearest test centre. There are 7 test centres in India, which include: Bangalore , Chennai , Hyderabad , Mumbai , New Delhi , Pune , Noida
