A New Opportunity for Indian Physiotherapists Who Want to Work Abroad
Over the years, our team has spoken to many healthcare students and professionals who dream of building an international career. Their questions often sound familiar:
“Is there a country where I can work without sitting another licensing exam?”
“Can I use my existing qualifications to move overseas?”
“What is the most suitable pathway for an Indian physiotherapist?”
I understand these questions. Physiotherapists invest years in education, clinical training, and professional development. When they begin exploring opportunities abroad, they can face unfamiliar registration rules, assessments, job-search challenges, and visa requirements.
The Geriatric Boom: Why Your Skills Are in Demand
One of the primary catalysts driving these new overseas opportunities is a massive global demographic shift. Developed nations like New Zealand and the United Kingdom are experiencing an unprecedented rise in their geriatric populations. This aging demographic brings a surge in chronic musculoskeletal conditions, osteoarthritis, and complex neurological events like stroke and Parkinson's disease.
Physiotherapists are urgently needed on the front lines for fall prevention, post-operative arthroplastic rehabilitation, and neuro-rehabilitation to keep older adults functionally independent. By keeping the elderly mobile, physiotherapists reduce the strain on high-cost residential care facilities. This urgent clinical demand is exactly why international physiotherapy recruitment has become a top legislative priority.
As a healthcare career mentor at Academically Global, my advice is always to start with the facts not just a promise that a country is easy to enter. One important option to investigate right now is New Zealand’s India Skilled Work Visa, which includes physiotherapists in its approved occupation list.
The India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was in talks and nowentered into force on 20 October 2026, introducing new temporary employment visa categories. For eligible Indian physiotherapists, this creates another route to explore an international career. It is an opportunity worth understanding carefully, but it is not an automatic visa or a guaranteed no-exam pathway.
What Is the India Skilled Work Visa?
The India Skilled Work Visa is a temporary work visa for eligible Indian citizens who have a qualifying full-time job offer in an approved occupation from an accredited New Zealand employer. Physiotherapists are included in the occupation list.
Immigration New Zealand lists 300 places for physiotherapists at any one time. Across the India Skilled Work Visa and India Iconic Work Visa categories, the overall arrangement allows up to 5,000 temporary employment entry visa holders at any one time. The 5,000 figure is not an annual allocation and is not reserved entirely for physiotherapists.
- Visa length: Up to three years, depending on the job offer and visa conditions. However you can apply for another visa for the rest of the time.
- Job offer: A current, qualifying full-time offer from an accredited employer.
- Minimum work hours: At least 30 hours per week.
- Study Allowance: Visa holders can study for up to three months in any 12-month period, perfect for taking clinical specialty workshops.
- Entry Deadline: You must travel to or arrive in New Zealand within 6 months of the date your visa is issued.
- Professional requirements:Applicants must meet the qualification, experience, and registration rules for the occupation.
- English, health, and character: The relevant requirements still apply.
- Availability: Applications are subject to the places remaining in the relevant category.
Can Indian Physiotherapists Work in New Zealand Without a Licensing Exam?
This is one of the most common questions and it needs a careful answer. Some physiotherapists may be eligible for the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand’s International Express Pathway, which does not list a separate New Zealand licensing examination as a routine step in the pathway. However, eligibility is specific, applications are assessed, and additional evidence may be requested.
To apply through the International Express Pathway, a physiotherapist must meet at least one of the Board’s criteria. These include currently holding unrestricted registration as a physiotherapist in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, or South Africa, or holding a qualifying pre-registration physiotherapy qualification from one of those countries.
The Board assesses applications against the Physiotherapy Practice Thresholds in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Applicants must provide the required documents, including identity evidence, primary physiotherapy degree or academic transcript, and certificates of good standing from relevant regulators. The Board may request additional documents, and meeting an entry criterion does not guarantee registration.
The UK HCPC-to-New Zealand Registration Route: What to Know
For some Indian physiotherapists, UK registration may be worth investigating as one part of a longer-term plan. If you obtain unrestricted HCPC registration as a physiotherapist, you may meet one of the eligibility criteria for the New Zealand International Express Pathway. But this is not an automatic transfer of registration: you must submit a separate application to the New Zealand Board and satisfy its requirements.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility for UK HCPC Registration The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) assesses international applications against its standards of proficiency. Your qualification, education, training, and experience must be supported by the required evidence. The HCPC may accept an application, request a test of competence, or refuse registration. Do not assume that an Indian physiotherapy qualification will automatically lead to registration or that no assessment will be required.
Step 2: Apply Separately to the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand If you meet the Express Pathway criteria, prepare the required documents and submit an application to the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand. The Board will review your application and determine whether it meets the registration requirements. UK registration does not itself authorise you to practise in New Zealand.
Step 3: Obtain Registration and an Annual Practising Certificate Registration and permission to practise are not identical. After registration, you must also obtain an Annual Practising Certificate (APC) before legally practising as a physiotherapist in New Zealand. Check the Board’s current recency-of-practice and other requirements that may apply to you.
Step 4: Secure a Genuine Job Offer from an Accredited Employer You will need a qualifying job offer that meets the visa rules, including the minimum 30-hour work week. Verify that the employer is accredited and that the position matches the requirements for the physiotherapist category. Be cautious of anyone who promises a guaranteed job or asks you to pay for a job offer. Immigration New Zealand warns that job-offer scams occur.
Step 5: Check Visa Eligibility and Apply Before applying, confirm that you meet the requirements for citizenship, qualifications, work experience, registration, health, and character. You must be outside New Zealand when applying for your first India Skilled Work Visa. Immigration New Zealand makes the final visa decision.

Who Is Eligible for the Physiotherapist Visa?
Immigration New Zealand’s published requirements for the physiotherapist category include:
- Indian citizenship and a valid Indian passport.
- A Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Health Sciences (Physiotherapy), or an equivalent qualification.
- At least three years of work experience in the occupation.
- Registration with the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand, as required for the role and visa application.
- A qualifying full-time job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer, for at least 30 hours per week.
- An acceptable English language test result, plus relevant health, character, and other immigration requirements.
The exact evidence you need depends on your circumstances. Review the current official requirements before making a financial commitment. A degree or overseas registration on its own does not guarantee a visa or New Zealand registration.
Is This an Option for Fresh Physiotherapy Graduates?
The physiotherapist category requires at least three years of work experience in the occupation, together with the specified qualification, registration, and job-offer requirements. A recent graduate may therefore need to build professional experience and investigate an appropriate registration route before qualifying for this visa.
What Does the 5,000 Figure Actually Mean?
The headline figure refers to the combined capacity of up to 5,000 temporary employment entry visa holders at any one time across the India Skilled Work Visa and India Iconic Work Visa arrangements. The physiotherapist allocation is strictly 300 places at any one time. These figures are not the number of visas guaranteed to be issued each year.
Can You Include Your Partner or Children?
Under the published India Skilled Work Visa conditions, you cannot include a partner or dependent children in your application. They are not eligible for a visa based on their relationship to you under this specific visa category.
Does the Visa Lead Directly to Permanent Residency?
No. The temporary employment entry visa arrangements do not provide a direct pathway to residence. The visa may allow an eligible person to work in the specified job for up to three years. Notably, time spent working on this visa cannot be used to claim skilled work experience for residency visas. Anyone whose long-term goal is residence should research separate residence categories.
My Advice to Indian Physiotherapists
Do not choose an international career pathway based only on the promise of an easy visa or no examination. Start by asking three practical questions:
- Is your qualification suitable? Check your degree, training, and clinical experience against the relevant registration standards.
- Which registration pathway could you qualify for? If you are considering the UK HCPC route, understand its assessment process first and then check the New Zealand Express Pathway criteria.
- Can you secure a genuine qualifying job offer? Professional registration and a work visa are separate processes, and you need to plan for both.
For some experienced Indian physiotherapists, a UK registration-to-New Zealand route may be worth exploring. For others, another pathway may be more suitable. The right next step depends on your individual profile not a one-size-fits-all promise.
Academically Global can help you plan the A-to-Z journey: assess your profile, understand the possible registration route, organise your document checklist, prepare your CV and job-search strategy, and map the next steps.
