AHPRAs Portfolio Stage to Get Authorization Test for NCLEX

The journey to preparing for the NCLEX and then practising nursing in Australia can be both exciting and challenging.

One of the critical steps in this journey is securing your Authorisation to Test (ATT) from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). The portfolio stage of AHPRA's online application is a part of this process.

In this blog, we'll explore what the portfolio stage involves and offer tips to navigate it successfully.

Understanding the Portfolio Stage

The portfolio stage of AHPRA's online application is designed to assess your qualifications, skills, and professional background to ensure you meet Australian standards. This stage involves compiling and submitting a comprehensive portfolio that includes your educational credentials, professional experience, and other supporting documents.

Who needs to complete the Portfolio stage?

Stream B candidates – Internationally qualified nurses and midwives (IQNMs) who complete the Self-check and are advised to continue as Stream B candidates will need to pay the IQNM assessment fee and complete Orientation Part 1 before completing the Portfolio stage.

IQNMs with qualifications requiring assessment – IQNMs whose qualification(s) are not available to select from the drop-down options in Self-check will be advised that Ahpra needs to assess their qualification. These IQNMs must pay the IQNM assessment fee and complete Orientation Part 1 before completing the Portfolio stage. Ahpra will then assess their qualification.

Once Ahpra has assessed the qualification(s), the candidate will be advised of their next steps to either:

  • Continue in the IQNM assessment process as a Stream A candidate or, a Stream B candidate, or
  • End their participation in the IQNM assessment process and upgrade their qualification if they wish to continue (as per advice provided to IQNMs assigned to Stream C).

Documentation required at the Portfolio stage

The following documentation must be uploaded to Portfolio:

  • official documentation for all qualifications relevant to the candidate's portfolio
  • copy of course certificate awarded (e.g. degree)
  • copy of the academic transcript
  • evidence of any change of name, and
  • proof of identity

If the qualification(s) require assessment, the IQNM must also provide a copy of the original regulatory authority's original registration certificate.

The above documents must be certified. Translated copies of all documents must be provided in a language other than English.

Suppose a candidate seeking registration in Australia as a registered nurse has successfully completed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) within 10 years of establishing their portfolio. In that case, evidence of passing the exam must be uploaded.

Portfolio review

Suppose AHPRA determines that the information and documentation provided at the Portfolio stage matches the information provided by the candidate at Self-check. In that case, the Stream B candidates will be advised to continue to the next assessment stage – the multiple-choice question (MCQ) exam. For IQNMs with qualification(s) requiring assessment, Ahpra will assess the qualification(s) and advise the candidate of their next steps.

Steps to Compile Your Portfolio

Gather Documents: Start collecting all necessary documents well in advance. Some documents, like reference letters, might take longer to obtain.

Certified Copies: Ensure that you have certified copies of your documents. AHPRA requires that copies of your original documents be certified by an authorised person.

Accurate Translations: You must provide certified translations if your documents are not in English.

Organise Your Portfolio: Keep your documents organised and in the order specified by AHPRA. This makes the review process smoother.

Double-Check Requirements: Ensure you understand and meet your profession's specific requirements. Different healthcare professions might have slightly different requirements.

Tips for a Successful Application

  1. Attention to Detail: Ensure all your documents are complete and accurate. Missing or incorrect information can delay your application.
  2. Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated with any changes in AHPRA's requirements. Their guidelines can change, and it's crucial to stay informed.
  3. Seek Professional Help if Needed: If you're unsure about any part of the application, consider seeking help from a professional advisor or someone who has successfully navigated the process.
  4. Follow-up: After submitting your portfolio, regularly check the status of your application. AHPRA might require additional information or clarification.
